Financial Support for Training in Colchester

Read more about funding guidelines here

Colchester's bid to host pre-Games training camps for London 2012 was scrutinised and endorsed by the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG) earlier this year against other facilities across the United Kingdom, and our offer will now appear in the official LOCOG guide to be released at the Beijing Olympics this summer. This not only demonstrates the high quality of our sporting facilities but ensures that any visiting nation that chooses Colchester for a pre-Games training camp would be eligible to apply for funding of up to £25,000 from LOCOG.

The facilities that will be included in the guide produced by LOCOG are:

Colchester Garrison -  for Archery, Athletics, Basketball, Fencing, Judo, Indoor Volleyball and Weightlifting.

Colchester Leisure World - for Basketball, Fencing, Judo, Table Tennis and Indoor Volleyball.

University of Essex (Colchester) - for Basketball, Football, Paralympic Archery, Boccia, Goalball, Sitting Volleyball, Wheelchair Basketball and Wheelchair Rugby.

SD Martial Arts (Colchester) - for Judo, Taekwondo, Wrestling

Visiting nations that choose to train in Colchester venues for these sports ahead of London 2012 can apply for up to £25,000 of financial support from LOCOG. Olympic and Paralympic teams from the same nation can apply for up to £25,000 each.

This financial support is provided by LOCOG and can be used to cover costs relating to accommodation, new equipment and facility hire costs. The Colchester Partnership for London 2012 will help any visiting nations to make these applications, liaising directly with LOCOG.

Visiting nations can still use other facilities in Colchester as part of their preparation camp, but can only use the financial support for the specific aspects relating to the facilities and sports listed above.
